Handel’s story of intrigue and inaccuracy in Ancient Rome got its first performances at the Met, with star mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as the leader of Agrippin and Harry Biket controlling and ruling power. Sir David McVicars’ staging really renews this black comedy about power abuse so far, where it must resonate loudly. Starring roles include mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey as son of Agrippin and future emperor Nero, soprano Brenda Rae as attractive Poppy, colleague Iestin Davis as ambitious Otton officer and bass player Matthew Rose as tired of Emperor Claudius.
Sir Breen Terfel’s wonderful bass baritone returns to business for the first time since 2012, starring the accursed sea captain dedicated to everlasting sailing on the high seas. Valery Gergiev is directing Francois Girard’s new production, whose visionary 2013 Parsifal has set the latest Met standard for Wagner’s productions. Thanks to John McFarlane’s great embellishments, Girard’s new production transforms the Met scene into a rich, layered picture that resembles a huge oil painting. The talented German soprano Anya Campo in her Met debut is a devoted Senta whose unselfish love is sought by the Dutch, bassist Franz Josef Selig as Daland’s father and tenor Sergey Skorokhodov as his previously abandoned lover Eric.
Soprano Anna Netrebko, whom the New York Times called gorgeous when she debuted as Tosca 2018, is returning as Puccini’s explosive maiden, following popular demand. Tenors Naymeddin Mavlyanov and Brian Jagde alternate as the idealistic artists of Cavaradossi, while baritones George Gagnidze and Michael Volle complete the deadly love triangle of opera as Sinister Scorpio. Bertrand de Billy directs the fantastic production of Sir David McWicars.
