It is the year 52 B.C. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the richest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis with a million inhabitants and the epicenter of a vast empire. The Republic, founded on the principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, never allowed a single man to assume absolute control.

Gaius Julius Caesar (Ciarn Hinds, Munich) ends the year-long campaign to conquer Gaul. In the course of his conquests, he grew rich and built a deadly army led by the Thirteenth Legion, a group of men ready to obey his every command. Two members of the fighting thirteen, Lucious Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, Kingdom of Heaven) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, King Arthur) are the main characters of the series.

Vorenus is a dedicated soldier and family man. He is respected by both men and Caesar himself. Pullo is a female, heavily drunk goalkeeper. His ruthless martial arts and rebellious style make him popular. The uneasy relationship between Vorenus and Pullo begins when circumstances force them to work together on a mission of great importance to Caesar.

Back in Rome, Casesar’s niece Atia (Polly Walker, Sliver) is an extremely ambitious and cunning player of the Roman nobility. Along with Caesar’s mistress Servila, we have two women who rival every man in the empire in cunning and ruthlessness. Atia’s son (and future Roman emperor) Octavian (Max Pirkis, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) is a preternaturally bright teenager with a keen understanding of Roman politics.

Caesar’s main rivals are Brutus (Tobias Menzies, The Lowdown) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, Layer Cake). Pompey is co-consul of Rome with Caesar. The battle between Caesar and Pompey is primarily a battle of willpower and wits. In the end, it’s all about swords. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar is much more complex. Caesar needs Brutus and his influential family to legitimize his rule, but Brutus is a republican who hates Caesar’s imperial ambitions. Their father-son relationship is a source of great internal conflict for both.

Caesar’s rise to power and its consequences for Rome provide the backdrop against which all the characters’ conflicts take place. Politics, personal rivalries, friendship and some Oedipal relationships are cleverly combined with historical facts to tell a unique story of Rome in one of its most turbulent periods. Don’t worry, I’ve only scratched the surface here. There are many characters and storylines in this sprawling story that I have left up to the viewer to discover.
