Windows 11. The main part of this announcement was to introduce a major user interface change, codenamed Sun Valley. As we know, a significant part of the UX changes will be borrowed from the Windows 10X environment, and Windows 10X is not coming to the market. Now, as expected, the Windows 11 leaks are starting.

What’s new in Windows 11:

– Windows 11 will get a completely new design. Microsoft clearly needs a good reason to reverse its previous claims and still abandon Windows 10 by introducing a new operating system number. And the brand new design is great for that. The giant from Redmond has long been preparing a redesign of the update with the code name Sun Valley (“Sun Valley”) – Windows 11 was probably under this name. The Sun Valley project has been flashing on the network for a long time – Microsoft regularly revealed details of the new interface style, insiders shared until then unknown information and popular designers in their circles drew realistic concepts based on all this data.

– Startup and system elements are moved above the bottom bar. Start is the business card and face of every newer version of Windows. It is not surprising that the developers will transform it again into the Windows 11 operating system, but not so much in a functional sense as in a visual sense – the Start window will float above the bottom bar. We have to admit that this small change makes the system much fresher. Judging by information from the network, Microsoft will not radically change the “inside” of this menu – the innovations will only affect the design of the window itself. The control panel will also float and its design will be exactly the same as in “Begin”. The action center will be combined with control buttons together – something similar has long been used in some other operating systems. Almost all mentions of this new menu suggest that it will be an island – the control buttons will be on one separate panel, notifications on another, and specific elements (like the player) on another separate one.

– Right angles disappear, fillets replace them. Insiders and designers of the concept do not agree on this issue – some are convinced that Microsoft will not change its tradition and keep rectangles, while others are convinced that in 2021 Microsoft will follow the fashion of fillets. The latter fits the definition of “new Windows” better – floating menus alone aren’t enough to make a new design truly new. Rounding is expected to affect almost everything in the system, from context menus and system trays to all application windows. It is true that even on this issue the opinions of designers differ – some draw curves in all possible elements of the interface, others combine them at right angles.

– There will be transparent background with blur everywhere. There are differences of opinion on the Internet about the island style of the window display, the corner design and the levitation effect of the menu, but almost everyone is unanimous about the transparency of the window. The vast majority of leaks and designs show transparency and blur in all windows, whetherit is at least the Start or Explorer menu. These effects are also in the composition of the canceled Windows 10X operating system, which Microsoft developed in parallel with the Sun Valley project for devices with two screens and weak devices. The so-called acrylic transparency means the use of new effects when passing through elements, as well as a greater distance between elements – those areas of the interface with which the user interacts will certainly become larger, and page titles will be bold.

– The new font is already displayed. Windows 11 will probably use the default Segoe UI Variable font that already appeared in Windows 10 Build 21376 for Insiders. Its advantage is that it is equally suitable for small texts and large inscriptions. This distinguishes it from standard fonts that were originally created for small or large size. For example, the stable version of Windows 10 currently uses the Segoe UI font designed for 9pt. It becomes illegible on smaller inscriptions and appears dull on large ones.

– Windows 11 will have new icons and Windows 95 icons will disappear. Yes, they are still used today. Microsoft will eventually change the icons used throughout the system. It’s not just about the links to folders, the trash can, and other icons found in Explorer. We are talking about all the icons available in the Shell32 directory. The icons from the days of Windows 95 are still there, and just recently Microsoft updated their design in one of the insiders – of course they are migrating to Windows 11.

– Windows 11 will have functional innovations – there are many of them, but they are all small. Much less is known about the upcoming update’s features than its design. But since Windows 11 and Windows 10X (the canceled operating system for thin and foldable devices, the image of which was leaked to the network) were developed in parallel, we can safely assume that all its features will appear in Windows 11. For example, Windows 11 will show when the computer is using the camera – the corresponding indicator will appear on the system tray.
